The Organic Farming Scheme provides payments to farmers who convert to or continue organic farming under Ireland's CAP Strategic Plan 2023–2027. Key payment rates:
• A participation payment of €2,000 in the first year of conversion, and €1,400 in subsequent years (potentially higher for farm partnerships).
• Annual per-hectare payments for drystock: €300/ha for holdings up to 70ha, €60/ha for land above 70ha.
• Organic tillage: higher rate per hectare.
• Organic horticulture: premium rate per hectare (up to €800/ha).
Farmers must be certified organic or in-conversion through an approved body (Irish Organic Association, Organic Trust, Demeter). A 25-hour Organic Production Principles Course must be completed. Applications open in tranches set by the Department of Agriculture, so check agfood.ie or your certifying body for the next opening. Note: The scheme is fully subscribed and new entry is not currently open.
