The Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant (VPRG), funded through the Croí Cónaithe Towns Fund, provides funding for the refurbishment of vacant and derelict properties built before 2008.
• Up to €50,000 for a vacant property (vacant for at least 2 years).
• Top-up of up to €20,000 for properties that are derelict (structurally unsound and dangerous, supported by an independent report, or on the Derelict Sites Register), bringing the total to €70,000.
• Island properties: up to €60,000 (vacant) or €84,000 (derelict).
• Since 31 March 2026 there is an extended grant for converting a former commercial or public use building into multiple homes, with larger top-ups. Ask your local authority for the current figures.
The property must become your principal private residence or be made available to rent. Applications can only be made by named individuals who own the property (or are actively purchasing it) — the grant is not available to registered companies or developers. The scheme is extended to 2030. Works cannot start before approval. Apply through your local authority (Vacant Homes Officer). Grant conditions apply. SEAI energy upgrade grants can be claimed separately for the same property.
